WORLDS OF FUN HISTORY - 1990's

It's hard to believe but now the 90's are far distant history as well, as the millennium officially closed out almost a decade ago. The 90's were a decade of change, both for the worl and for Worlds of Fun. They saw an end to opression in many countries as the pieces of the Berlin Wall fell in 1991 and also led to further decades of discovery with the beginning of the International Space Station. Worlds of Fun however, as history will tell us did not fare as well as the world. The 1990's started on a bright note in 1991 Timberwolf was still brand new and was ranked as number one roller coaster in the world, and a new venture named Beat Street revitilized an old River City area featuring the not so new Rockin' Reeler and Skyliner.

The following year Worlds of Fun celebrated its twenty year annivesary with a splash from the giant new water ride, The Monsoon and an unprecidented joining of the two parks Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun through the same-day gateway. Worlds of Fun in 1993 celebrated with the American Coaster Enthusiasts who gave Worlds of Fun the honor of hosting their annual Coaster Con at this mid-west park and also welcomed the new coaster arrival for the young coaster enthusiasts, The Wacky Worm. However, hidden under the limlight the destruction of our beautiful park was beginning as we saw the removal of the first of the original trio of Worlds of Fun ships, The Victrix, rotted out from neglect. In 1994, the dark clouds billowing over Worlds of Fun where becoming more apparent as Worlds of Fun was beginning to lose touch with its original fun, crowd pleasing atmosphere. The new ride The Sea Dragon didn't help lighten spirits either as yet another ride favorite, The Wobble Wheel was removed from the park, with its replacement, Cyclone Sam's on its heals added in 1995. By mid-1995 the park was at a stalemate, plans where about to move forward for a revitilazation of new exciting park rides and renovations, when the alarming news came. Worlds of Fun was to be sold, to a company that was world renowed for the best park in the World, Cedar Point.

When Cedar Fair took over it seemed at first that the bad days were over and that Cedar Fair would come in and clean up the park and bring it back to its glory days, and so it seemed in the first few years. Even though loyal park patrons grimaced at the removal of the Cotton Blossom and the discontinuation of the classic Delores Hadley Marionette Show and the Americana Main Gate and tram service. Fans where awed and amazed by their replacement by two new scream machines in 1996, The Detonator, the first twin towered space shot and The Ripcord, an amazing new heartstopping sky diving ride. However, as Worlds of Fun gloried in its silver anniversary a classic Worlds of Fun show was removed, The Fins and Flippers Dolphin Show was finally yanked at the end of the 1996 season. These removals seemingly foreshadowed the removal of several other Worlds of Fun classics in the following years.

Pandamonium!, the Americana children's section that had been so much a part of Worlds of Fun to many children of the 1980's was finally put out of its misery at the end of 1996 to make room for Bearenstain Bear Country. Also added was the Summer Spectacular to the Forum Amphitheater, which thrilled viewers for its first few years. However, as we were beginning to get used to Cedar Fair they removed what many considered the very heart of Worlds of Fun, our beloved classic roller coaster, The Zambezi Zinger. The Zinger which had become loved by many Worlds of Fun guests over the years never failed to scare to pieces in the early years and earn the special place as one of the favorite rides at Worlds of Fun in the later years. However the momentum was building and the Zinger would soon be replaced by the bite of a deadly African snake....

In 1998, after years of no new coaster, Cedar Fair added its fourth hypercoaster, The Mamba, . As the mast head for both the 1998 and the 1999 seasons, The Mamba was at once a hit, but it became sadly a dead end promise of things to come. The park expected Mamba to carry the capacity of the park with no major additions for several years. Worse yet, it had to carry the burden of being one of only two thrilling coasters at the park for several years as well. Mamba was the coaster that could stand up to the challenge and succeeded in forging a "beloved ride" status in just a few short years. It's for this reason the park would survive successfully into the next decade. The Millinnium would finally come to an end with 1999, and it and the following years would be the darkest years in Worlds of Fun history. The park would start the slump in 1999 with the addition of a single pay extra Grand Prix Raceway. Signs also started appearing of Cedar Fair's lack of interest in the park's tradition as a theme park. The disregard to the theme is still evident to this day with the addition of the Coaster's 50's-style grill in the African section, as well as the removal of minor but no less important attactions such as the Americana Gate and the removal of Worlds of Fun's christening ship, The Henrietta.
